A trip to Uunisaari and its restaurant
Jun. 1st, 2010 08:50 amLast night, for the first time I actually went to eat at the restaurant on Uunisaari. I've been on the island before during the wintertime when it's possible to walk on the ice, one day we went around a couple of the islands that aren't too far. They apparently also have a bridge they build in the winter when the boat can't go. Yesterday we took the boat though, we could have easily swam across... but oh well. We went there for the final dinner for a workgroup I've been working with for about a year. It was good to see that many people came by bike. It's the return of the lovely weather, not the amazing we had two weeks ago but this is still not bad at all! A little history about Uunisaari first though, the main point of the island was that the beach there was meant to be where the swimming events would take place during the 1940 Olympic Games that Helsinki was supposed to host. Obviously it didn't happen in 1940 and by the time 1952 Games came around there was another location for the swimming... so that never happened. During the war though the place was used to make some ammunition and coffins and then the city of Helsinki bought the island. You can go visit it freely, it's only the restaurant that's private property. Alrighty, some more photos of the island itself and the food and the sunshine and why it's awesome coming back home at 11pm by bike under the cut. ( +11 - island - food - drinks - sun ) |
