Let me headdesk and facepalm a bit here.
Schools 'too safe' teachers say
Great quote:
When questioned by Teachers TV, teachers complained about a five-page briefing on using glue sticks and being told to wear goggles to put up posters.
And from another artcile on the subject:
They included footballs banned from the playground in case of injury; a ban on running in the playground, having to wear goggles if using Blu-Tack, wet grass stopping PE lessons, no pictures hanging below 7ft; and not being allowed to use toilet roll tubes.
I mean come on... part of being a child is falling down and scrapping your knees! What's wrong with having PE class on wet grass? I remember having PE class outside when it was raining and we were just fine. And what's this about wearing goggles when putting up posters! I've also put a glue stick in my mouth, didn't die of it. Teachers used to give out hard candy when we were nice children, now they can't because it's a chocking hazard. True story.
I'm telling you, the upcoming generations are doomed if they don't learn some basic survival things such as "it's ok to fall down, just get back up again and go on with your game" or "everything is worth trying at least once". Actually, now that I think about it, maybe those next generations are doomed because being so overprotected they will want to rebel and will all end up major potheads or drug addicts. Just mark my words!

Date: 2009-06-22 06:58 am (UTC)Seriously, back in MY day, accidents were considered a learning experience rather than an excuse to sue someone. But today's generation of kids, I think they are being raised to have TOO much self-esteem, and that's causing a massive case of entitlement and lack of personal responsibility. Heaven forbid you tell your kid that they did something wrong, noooo, they're all special and precious and should be encouraged no matter what! *sighs* What kind of adulthood are you setting them up for, if they don't get the opportunity to learn from their mistakes?
"Poor Johnny, it's not YOUR fault that you broke your tooth trying to chew a hard candy... that irresponsible teacher shouldn't have given it to you in the first place, it's HER fault!" Etc.
Why send the kids to school at all? I mean, they could get hit by a car on the way, or the schoolbus could explode in flames. Not likely, sure, but probably about as likely as some kid dying from eating a drop of glue.
