cerealjoe: (chris - whee!)

  • This video kind of makes me want to get a skateboard and try to learn. I figure that I know how to cycle, rollerblade and ski, can't be that difficult. Then again that's what I thought about snowboarding and we all know how I went right back to skiing after a single lesson, at least when skiing I can go at high speeds and my chances of falling are much lower.

  • Super interesting video about keirin in Japan and it's completely different from the sport we know around here. It's actually basis for gambling and every year over 7 million euros are spent in bets! They have keirin schools and they have their own code of honor and everything. So fascinating! As they say at the start, it's not about the strongest one winning every single time, then that wouldn't be gambling. Cycling as gambling, wow!

  • No longer counting food calories but rather care calories - or how to stay sane! Love the tone of this cartoon.

  • I've already linked up this article on tumblr, it's an interesting take on cities and sustainability - here's a quote I like: “A human being at rest runs on 90 watts. That’s how much power you need just to lie down. And if you’re a hunter-gatherer and you live in the Amazon, you’ll need about 250 watts. That’s how much energy it takes to run about and find food. So how much energy does our lifestyle [in America] require? Well, when you add up all our calories and then you add up the energy needed to run the computer and the air-conditioner, you get an incredibly large number, somewhere around 11,000 watts. Now you can ask yourself: What kind of animal requires 11,000 watts to live?" I don't work with watts but rather joules and exergy but it's still kind of awesome.

  • And I'll relink the Julie Project because I've only mentioned it in an FO entry. Really fascinating photography and story. For me the most fascinating aspect is how the photographer is able to not judge, I wish I could do that.
