Oh, and in the land of "this is something that is quite interesting and I knew almost nothing about till now even though I should have known about all of this a lot more" - How The Woman Got Her Period. Apparently we got the short end of the evolution stick on this one... from a certain POV.

Apparently there was a 5.1 an earthquake last night in Barcelonette (that's a town a bit up North, not Barcelona) that could be felt down here also... but I didn't feel it at all. It happened at 9:27PM and I do remember thinking that it would be nice to have a snack, so maybe that had been fuelled by the micro shaking.

Interesting stuff to ponder - GoogleMaps and how it deals with territorial "conflicts" (and how it could possibly deal with Crimea in the future). You do have to wonder just how dumb that guy in the first example was... who uses GoogleMaps as a reference to what a country's border is? Because clearly everything you see on the Internet is true! Everyone knows that! It's like those people who drive off into lakes because they blindly follow their GPS.

Oh, and a possible (although very expensive) Father's Day present - a portable sawmill that a single person can carry, set up and use to cut up whole trees. Alas I think the thing can only pay itself if you live close to a forest where you can legally cut trees and there are good species of trees around, somehow I don't think the pine trees around here are worth a lot.

Will I ever stop considering the weather as the most fascinating thing on Earth? Not very likely. Many things in life do not change but we're lucky around here that it seems that the weather is going to be changing a bit.

Just look at the end of the week that's they're promising us!

No, I do not have issues. I am genuinely happy that we're going to be getting snow, that it's going to get colder and everything. It's been a rather warm and wet autumn and those are never fun. White snow on the ground, it adds something to life. And maybe I will finally get to change those bike tyres…

Let's make this more interesting though…
  • Have I already posted this cartoon? No one messes with tiny hippo!

  • And what else should one do with mobile phones besides having Mobile Phone Throwing Championships?
In fact, the recycling awareness event went so well that 18-year-old Ere Karjalainen set a new championship record of 101.46 meters. The secret? Just an old Nokia device (obviously) plus a bit of preparation the day before -- "mainly by drinking."

    Oh, Finland. ♥

cerealjoe: (albator - my first love)
Everyone's brain is different and I bet that's why I'm always fascinated by all those GTD posts where people share just how they get things done... and yet I find that those things never work for me. It's always like that. Like in school I was the kid in the front row who would glare at those who were talking because if I didn't hear something properly most likely I wasn't going to remember it and reading about it later would have been useless unless I read that section three times. It doesn't really explain my love for trivia and the fact that I can remember tons of random bits of information... but I bet that's because I usually am not required to read three chapters of a book to learn them.

Still, moving on, this all to say that I have developed a surprisingly long technique to weed out daily information that comes to me, either for recreation or work. It usually involves either Flipboard -> Read It Later -> Evernote or iBook -> Skitch -> Evernote. It's really all about me seeing the same bit of information three or more times and weeding out the stuff that I really don't need and only keeping and filing information that I might need at one point. Heck, even in Evernote there are two steps, first shove it in a general notebook and then tag and file in the correct notebook. And it actually works. Now what I would really need is a giant interactive whiteboard where I could organise things in even more neurotic ways...

Because it's really getting neurotic. I even organise the books I want to borrow from the library in this manner. Everything is tagged by the library where the books are and if I should order them to get them delivered to my local library or if I should make a field trip to a distant library, etc.

And well, it nicely justifies the mess that is my closet and my tangible paper documents (which I scan and store in specific notebooks in Evernote). It's all about the yin and yang of organisation... as in I have perfect organisation for the courses I coordinate/tutor/teach but my thesis is mostly a jumble of notes from 1023482387438 different books and papers, which are in three notebooks that I should really start tagging more properly.

Right. How about some totally useless stuff I've seen here and there lately?

  • "Shitstorm" was voted by the Germans the Anglicism of the Year. I wish Frenchies used anglicisms like that!

  • Star Wars Uncut is just a hilariously amazing video remake of the Star Wars: A New Hope done by fans, everyone contributing a specific 15 seconds of the film. So, so, so brilliant and hilarious and so many creative styles used! Definitely to watch and admire!

  • You know sometimes you fall on some really fascinating photography that's also really freaky? These hybrid portraits by Bobby Neel Adams are amazing to look at but they make me incredibly uncomfortable.

  • Color - Method of Action - I posted about this on Twitter a while back and it's has to be one of the most creative games online... and yet it is so frustrating because the moment I think I have the right colour, I move the mouse just a bit and I lose it right away. Don't start playing if you don't have half an hour to waste.

  • "I don't believe in God... I'm not a child. I only believe in things that are rational and completely real, such as libertarianism, Star Wars, Star Trek, steampunk, My Little Pony, and anime." (illustration by Married to the sea) I guess this is the part I should admit that I make a terrible geek/nerd. I could never get into Star Trek, I don't get steampunk nor do I understand the fascination people have with My Little Pony. Then again I have an unhealthy obsession with Albator/Captain Harlock and consider anything related to .hack pretty darn awesome.

cerealjoe: (ASIF - Kill Starks!)
Food for thought...

... or I just need to clear out all the stuff I've been putting as "starred" on my GoogleReader. Yep, that's how I keep track of things I should one day mention here so then when I have to find a link again I can wade through thousands of my own posts rather than google it up. It makes sense! (in my head)

  • Photography used for good. Or just for us to say "wow", a lot. Alan Sailer took photos of things just as a riffle bullet hit them, who would have thought that exploding play-dough would look so awesome.

  • This is rather scary. A flying sphere. I can't explain why the heck it scares the bejesus out of me but if I clearly remember having a nightmare once where I was chased by things looking like that sphere that were shooting rather accurately. Maybe I need to lay off the sci-fi stuff for a while.

  • 25cm diameter sushi. Yeah. (and for some reason I feel compelled to recreate that at some point in my life)

  • At some point someone has to realise what they're doing is a bit messed up if it results in people being able to light the water from the tap with a match.

  • Abandoned but perfectly preserved Japanese school For the not-so-squeamish, there is also an almost abandoned (but apparently still partially open for business) snake center.

  • On a lighter note, surfer dogs! Even I could never look that fly...

  • Brilliant literary Dalek illustrations.

  • The FMEA has, apparently, a Waffle House Index. If the local Waffle Houses aren't open, you're very much screwed so run for cover.

  • Ah. La Défense and their post-it wars.

  • You know it's not going to be pretty when the title of the post is Felted Berets For Your Cat.

  • Now that's one cool artistic dad, making cool artistic lunch bags.

  • This is also another level of scary, just look at how the Indian-Pakistani border is lit! Don't know how many lux that is but I imagine quite a few.
cerealjoe: (DW - The Master - I'm made of win)
Let's see, a few cool things I've had opened in my tabs for days but have forgotten to link:
- be Mario - or just jump like he does!
- Gregorius Suhartoyo's work is amazing, great scenes and colours (via).
- Danny Macaskill still continues to impress, this time in Industrial Revolutions. That guy is a genius on his bike.
- can you believe that these are paintings and not photos?
- after that new Planet of the Apes sequel/prequel/remake or whatever it was, Planet of the (LOL)cats. Alas the trailer is only in French but it's rather straight forward!

Meanwhile... sunshine and flowers and surprisingly no cicadas today, they're probably sad I will leave them and therefore shut up. Or it's too hot and windy for them. Either way, not having the ruckus is great!

I am so disconnected from anything that is not directly related to my little immediate world that I completely missed the fact that right now we probably have the coldest temperatures in the south of France. And it's about 30C indoors at night. At least the sun goes down faster so there is a bit more rest for us.

In other news, some cool stuff seen around recently...
- there is this video Above The Dust (via) which makes me want to take up some more adventurous biking.
- The Nerd Brain shirt. Someone should get it for me because that's pretty much me except that maths and science took over the comic book section. Never could quite get into those.
- The Frenchies might enjoy (or be traumatised for life) this little song about Star Wars. It hurts. A lot. I warned you that you might end up traumatised for life!

And now for something completely different!

In other news, I was all *grabby hands* when I first saw this Holga lens post for micro 4/3 cameras but really now the shine has worn off. It's not like I often take off the 20mm f1.7 lens anyway.

In terms of politics, this flow chart about Sarkozy's way of getting thing accepted can be adapted to a lot of countries.

If you have some extra time and an inner geek, you might want try this out. Warning: involves floating balls and magnets.

And have a bunny and Superman's troubles in London. I mean those Time Lords go parking their TARIDISes everywhere... can't even find a proper phone booth anymore.
cerealjoe: (alex - cheers)
So unless you've been living under a rock or are not a Finn or do not have any Finnish friends or friends who live in Finland or are not a hockey fan, then you've probably seen the most important news of all this past week - yes, Finland beat Sweden and is now the world hockey champion. Had they won against Russia or Canada, meh, would have been nice but no, this is Sweden they beat.

The last time it happened was in 1995 and if you go to Finland and hang out with some hockey fans they'll tell you about "Den glider in" and why that's the song that Finns associate to the Finnish hockey team even though it's in Swedish. What happened was that the Swedes were so stocked about that world cup and they were so sure that they were going to win it that they had already a song written for it... and then, bam!, the Finns won and decided to annoy the Swedes even more and took over singing that song. And since 1995 it's like a ritual, you have to karaoke to it at least once. Have I ever mentioned that Finns are rather huge on karaoke? They've even got "karaoke taxis", they're exactly what the title says, a taxi you take a karaoke system in it and you can sing while getting to your destination.

Anyway, 95% of the people I know in Finland were going mental during the game. Even peeps who don't really care about sports! And then they won, beat Sweden 6-1 and everyone got out and seeing the photos of the craziness in Helsinki at 2pm I can imagine that it was grand. Then on Monday everyone went to the Helsinki city center to see the team and, I'll be honest, I've never seen so many people in the Helsinki city center at one time. Crazy, crazy stuff!

Now some awesome stuff about Finland and the celebrations!

- A interactive photo of all the peeps in the city center. Told ya it was madness!
- Tons of photos of the night in Helsinki. (watch out, one or two are not exactly work safe)
- This video of the coach of the team coming down the plane... and being, well, a Finn after they've won the world cup - that is not too sober. Too cup thought! (thanks [livejournal.com profile] annastesia for the link)
- And now the cup is being repaired
- Cute comic referencing the lion stabbing itself in the head (see Stephen Colbert pointing it out)
- Also this is a fun look at the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish coat of arms.
- Finally, some celebrations are deemed too offensive and full of nudity for YouTube. Ah... poor Manta statue, you've seen better days!

Moving on to other lions. In Braunschweig there is the well known Wolters but there is also the Schadt's micro-brewery. And the lion connection there because their website features a lion! Totally makes sense.

The stronger brew is not bad.

Every couple of months someone on my FB feed discovers the amazing and wonderful beauty of UFOPORNO! Yep, kiddoes, this is Finnish entertainment at its best. And it has "porno" in the title. And every single time I see it pop up, it's the same headshaking. I leave you to enjoy...

(btw, not necessarily kid or work friendly!)

And now I leave you with some other UFO related stuff. Clearly not sexy enough.

In other news, I feel like an umbrella with a periscope and goggles would make my life just that much better. But honestly I would never use it, not much rain around here and when it rains it's so windy that umbrellas are rather useless.

In Vaudeville, the performers were asked not to swear as "son of a gun" could offend innocent ears. These days kids watch the Jersey Shore, and from this rather hilarious Jersey Shore Gone Wilde, a five part series in which the pair reenact actual transcripts of Jersey Shore episodes ‘in the style of Oscar Wilde’, I can assume that the language in the original series is rather colourful.

Also makes me wonder if they get bleeped out a lot or if they no longer bleep out things on cable telly.

The musings of Easter Monday. That's not a French thing, Easter Monday, right? Everyone has the day off or not?

Tomorrow I'm setting up my own business as a freelance procrastinating dreamer. Tomorrow.

Also, have you ever felt the need to look like a major junkie while making pancakes? No? You don't know what you're missing! Just look at how it's done. Screw all those molecular gastronomy restaurants... we should have cook-like-a-junkie ventures.

Bon, ça va, je sors, je sors... allez, profitez un peu du soleil de la semaine dernière.

Who said a purple dress was always irrelevant?

cerealjoe: ([kpop] b2st - hyunseung - i'm not laughi)
You guys! We've been in the dark for all these years but now we can know the truth - the Moomins are one step away from being Satan's concubine!

Here are the best bits from the "truth" behind those evil Moomins:

Moomintroll is a bastard son of Moominmamma and Moominpappa. Has openly sexual relationship with Snorkmaiden. Sometimes they live in sin together in Moomin house. Troll is malevolent being out of Scandinavian mythology, originally referring to Finnish people.

Yes! Can you imagine?!? Those bastards live in sin together in Moomin house! The horror! And it is self-evident that Finns are related to trolls, why didn't I know this all these years?

Moominmamma & Moominpappa - Guardians of Moomintroll, not married, relationships are unclear. Let Moomintroll share bed with harlot Snorkmaiden under their roof.

The Hemulen - Maybe the most deviant of all creatures in Moomin valley. This seemingly harmless elder chap is truly a libertine and abomination. He lives alone, wears a purple dress, collects butterflies and stamps and like frolicking with younger males of the Moomin valley. This lewd sodomite goes constantly on sex vacations.

Oh hell no. Sex vacations and a purple dress? There is never an excuse for a purple dress!

And the list goes on... Little My is a "thieving anarchist", Snorkmaiden is a "whore", Snufkin is a "revolting freeloading hippie".

If you've never read the books, written by a "worst kind of openly lesbian feminatzi", here is a short description of Exploits of Moominpappa - "Self-explanatory. Stories of young Moominpappa indulging in world of crime, booze and gay sex." I think I'll have to go back and reread the story, I must have missed all the gay sex the first time around.

Ah! The whole thing is just trolling at its best. The whole forum actually takes trolling to a new level. Guys, do tell me that it's all joking and trolling and that these people are not serious. If they are, I fear for the ones who are around them...

And remember kids, never touch anything Moomin related without gloves because there is great evil right there!

On a more serious note though, my lentils sprouted beautifully but my millet is taking its time. Apparently millet can be a tricky one, certainly not the one-day easy sprouting that you have with quinoa. But these things need to be learnt, no doubt.

And speaking of food... still the Zenit/Kodak 200 roll from the city center!

+2 - out and about in the street )

Dudes and dudettes, it's SuperMoon time tonight! Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. We can now blame everything and anything on it. Spilled your morning tea? Totally SuperMoon's fault, it's the shift in gravity! Fell down while going out for a run? Damn you SuperMoon!

The best part is that some people have been blaming SuperMoon for everything that's been happening for the past two months. I mean who cares about physics anyway?

And here is SuperSun. They'll soon have their own telly show... it'll be on the same level as San Ku Kai, with epic battles. Seriously though, those battles almost make old school Doctor Who seem totally modern!

I dare you to watch that battle video without laughing. I dare you!

cerealjoe: (chris - whee!)

  • This video kind of makes me want to get a skateboard and try to learn. I figure that I know how to cycle, rollerblade and ski, can't be that difficult. Then again that's what I thought about snowboarding and we all know how I went right back to skiing after a single lesson, at least when skiing I can go at high speeds and my chances of falling are much lower.

  • Super interesting video about keirin in Japan and it's completely different from the sport we know around here. It's actually basis for gambling and every year over 7 million euros are spent in bets! They have keirin schools and they have their own code of honor and everything. So fascinating! As they say at the start, it's not about the strongest one winning every single time, then that wouldn't be gambling. Cycling as gambling, wow!

  • No longer counting food calories but rather care calories - or how to stay sane! Love the tone of this cartoon.

  • I've already linked up this article on tumblr, it's an interesting take on cities and sustainability - here's a quote I like: “A human being at rest runs on 90 watts. That’s how much power you need just to lie down. And if you’re a hunter-gatherer and you live in the Amazon, you’ll need about 250 watts. That’s how much energy it takes to run about and find food. So how much energy does our lifestyle [in America] require? Well, when you add up all our calories and then you add up the energy needed to run the computer and the air-conditioner, you get an incredibly large number, somewhere around 11,000 watts. Now you can ask yourself: What kind of animal requires 11,000 watts to live?" I don't work with watts but rather joules and exergy but it's still kind of awesome.

  • And I'll relink the Julie Project because I've only mentioned it in an FO entry. Really fascinating photography and story. For me the most fascinating aspect is how the photographer is able to not judge, I wish I could do that.

cerealjoe: (yellow - the sun/flowers = otp)

A couple of interesting things:
  • The the slowest and longest piece of music in history. It's happening in Halberstadt, Germany... and it will be there till, hopefully, 2639. So you know, if you can't make it tomorrow, you still have some time.

  • The inside of cucumbers can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the surrounding air. Merci QI!

  • So you don't like sushi but you like Italian stuff (I'm not talking about pizza here), how about some Italian sushi? Actually here you have step by step photos. Now you know what to make for dinner.

  • Iran officials see "Zion" written in the Olympic logo. I thought we all agreed that the closest thing that logo came to was... umm... how to say it nicely? You know... Lisa Simpson doing something not necessarily PG-13.

  • And finally this is kind awesome, ten drugs you should not take when driving. Those Germans! (I also like the one with the ten things not to do in a public bathroom but I can't find one with subs to link)

As it's March early, time to prove that perhaps spring isn't that far away. I have to try every known methods to convince myself of that because all the greyness and the rain are sure making it hard to remember.

+6 - more sunshine and flowers and no birds. boo. )

In the land of WTF, I present the Hello Kitty "Fill in the blanks" Psychological Test. Made in 2002. With terrible grammar. And extremely small resolution.

After having answered that the beetle would rather go back into the forest than eat (must be somehow a psychological question related to Kafka) and that the bright red/green mushroom is poisonous and not the brown one (I think that tested my early childhood mushroom gathering trauma), I got that I have "a fair stress level". In Hello Kitty world that means (and I quote):

"One of the reasons for this is your conscious awareness to release your stress before letting it get worst.

However when you come across many troubles at the same time, you might unable to handle it. There comes the problem. For this type you better enjoy the green and wood.

As long as you are in the natural environment, you will be peaceful to resolve any problems."

Thank you, Hello Kitty, for providing such insight into my being. I'm off into "the green and wood" now. And by "the green and wood" I mean "off to work some more on my little simulations but the colours of the graphs are mainly yellow, orange and green, kind of like green and wood."

Well, that was fun. Anyone tried to understand what the questions meant and get a good result? Possibly we can all go hang out "in the natural environment" to "be peaceful to resolve any problems."

All this was brought to you by mini!Gali. Although, thankfully, at the time I had no idea who or what the heck Hello Kitty was... I had other friends to play with.

Now I also notice that I had what appears to be slightly curly or wavy hair. Ah, how we change.
