cerealjoe: (bsg - six - leaving)

One of the greatest things about Helsinki is that some traditions hold even though the city is modern. You can still wash and hang your rugs to dry on what is probably one of the most popular seaside walks! And the best part is that most likely no one will try to steal those rugs.

We saw those hanging last Sunday when [livejournal.com profile] bad_habit was in town. Right by the water you have huge tables where you can nicely scrub everything out of your rugs and then you have the squeezing machine and then where to dry the rugs. We also have this kind of set-up in Lauttasaari... alas I don't really own huge rugs to clean!

Also as we continued walking along the shore we came to this rather bizarre statue that was gifted by the USSR. Nothing says "Finland, now we're besties!" like a huge statue! At least the pigeons seem to like it. Actually the fun part is that in the two and a half years I've been in Helsinki, I had never walked those 500m along the shore between Cafe Ursula and Olympiaterminaali before.

and now for some discussions on cafes and birds )
