cerealjoe: (FF - simon going mad)

It's A Photoswap was back again this year and I got to send my little film all the way to the UK. I chose my favourite kind of film for the Diana Mini, Lomo redscale 100.

This film was developed and scanned by my Photoswap partner, Ashley..

I won't post all of the half-shots that came from that film because 36x2 is a lot... so here are half of them! No, that's not too many. Okie, it may be a tad too many but quand on aime, on ne compte pas!

17x2 more photos of Helsinki and my last days there this year )

And of course in exchange I got a film to develop! In the end the whole process took quite some time... and it only went to prove that in some things I'm a creature of habit and yes, I do miss the good old Fotoyks place.

I got to meet adorable animals (and some humans too)!

4x2 more photos from the UK )
cerealjoe: (cupcakes - godzilla loves them too!)

I finally got another roll back from the shop and this time it goes back to before my trip to Korea. I actually wanted to finish it off quite fast so I took the camera for a walk around the neighbourhood.

So here my little part of Lauttasaari.

4x2 = 8 more shots, from flowers to Lapin Kulta trucks )

I think these came out rather well, Fuji 200 on "cloudy" setting on very sunny days works then!
cerealjoe: (cycling - with a friend)

My little bike... in less than a month we'll have to say good-bye to each other. And I'll have to say good-bye to being able to cycle everywhere even in the middle of the day without sweating too much. Predictions show that in Marseille it's about 30C in the afternoon these days and we're not in August yet!

See, even the Diana Mini loves you!

And speaking of bikes, if you're interested in the cycling stuff mentioned in this post, it's still available. The stamps are already claimed though.
cerealjoe: (TBBT - Rock spock)

Montreux, caught on film, part... something something. Actually this is probably part 1 as the previous photos ended on the way there.

These are posted straight as they came out of the shop, it's a good thing I had used 400 film, I think the Diana Mini with anything less isn't all that great when the sun is not out.

fourteen more half frames )
cerealjoe: (marmotte - elle met le chocolat)

I finally got around to having a look at how the photos from the latest colour film from the Diana Mini came out. They're a tad dark but the guys at the shop were awesome and did not apply any equalisers/filters/etc. and let me tell you it's such a joy to work with raw photos rather than trying to counter the stuff that someone else has done.

This film started out at CERN and concluded at a CS meeting from two weeks ago... that's a lot of stuff to look at!

So first, here's CERN and a bit of France!

From that same b&w film, all photos were taken in Lauttasaari.

seven more photos )

They say you live and learn and that's exactly what's it been like with film photography for me for the past couple of months. I finally got around to taking a look at the photos from the old black and white film a friend randomly gave me on our trip to Stockholm and I must say it's the film that has impressed me the most so far.

Someone commented on how most of the photos seem to be washed out grey and that I could bring black proper blacks by changing the levels and I tried that. I really did but you know what? It's just not the same. Most of these photos are washed out because there were taken on rather not-so-sunny days with a toy camera and iso 100 film. In the end I much prefer them washed out grey. I have a couple of nice and crispy looking photos from that roll... but all of them don't need to be like that.
It's hard to believe that I have rarely been back to Senate Square after taking these photos in April. Doesn't seem so long ago.

I really like that photo of the street to Stockmann. I should check what's in the other half shot and get a proper paper print if something nice.

On another note, still about b&w photos, when giving your film to develop/scan, tell the people at the photo shop not to equalise/level, especially if you're working with half-shots. You can't really edit your photos afterwards... and you'll never have the possibility to have washed out grey is they level.
cerealjoe: (biology - my dad's work)

Today is my dad's 50th birthday! If there is anyone in this world who makes 50 look young, that's my dad!

So Happy Birthday Dad!

At first I was going to post a picture of either my sister or I with my dad when we were babies but I can't find the photo anymore... oh well. In case anyone is interested, here is a photo of us 24 years later, taken this spring.

In terms of people who have heavily influenced my life, my father is right there at the top. I doubt I would have gone into research if he wasn't in that also. I certainly wouldn't know what GABA receptors and NMDA are if it weren't for him... He's done some crazy things with me, he's run the Marseille-Cassis a bunch of times just to help me stay motivated even when I was ready to give up at 100m away from the top. He's reworked the whole garden at the house, he's completely rebuilt the shed there. Hopefully sometime in the next year we'll be able to go climb some ridiculous mountain, I suggested the Kilimanjaro or trying for the holy trinity of Japanese mountains. I think the highest we've ever climbed together was somewhere around 3500m or so which in the end isn't that much compared to what's possible out there. Still, he's climbed about every mountain in the ex-USSR in his youth, that's how awesome he is!

Bah. That also means that I'm turning 25 later this year and I should really start thinking about acting my age... but instead I just told my whole family that we're going to Parc Asterix because I haven't been there in ages. How's that for acting like a grown up?
cerealjoe: (H2G2 - whale/flower OTP)

Alright. It's Friday. Sadly enough for me, it doesn't really matter if it's Friday or not... work can be done at any time of the day and on any day of the week. I really thought this entry was going to be an entry with me bitching about everything not going too well in my life. Well, I already kind of ranted out a lot of what was going on in my mind in yesterday's FO entry, so we'll keep at that.

Plus I had the pleasant surprise that, for once, a thing I was waiting for got sent to me with only about a half-day delay and not three weeks as it usually happens! That was lovely. Then I didn't get rained on majorly this morning, that's another great thing! And well, that's about it for great things today...

I have a feeling the bitching will come a tad later today when I work out in my head how to send an email to the people who need to get some info without it being too passive aggressive.

In any case, I want to write a little thing about the Diana Mini. Yes, I think everyone knows that I love that little camera and for many, many, many reasons. I also love the guy who developed that redscale roll because he didn't mess up too much and actually listened to me when I asked him not to equalise the colours during the scanning because they're half shots (alright, so he heard the "half shot" part but the equaliser still had a field day... but it's a start)!

Great thing #1: You can take multiple exposures. As many as you want! (although more than two on a sunny day is a bad idea)

Great thing #2: You can choose when and how much to advance the wheel! That means you can have weird superpositions between shots!
another example of the same setting )

All this leads to wonderful little accidents... (and where the equaliser has a field day). You can call that "art" and pretend you totally meant to do that!

BTW, the two shots above (which are made up of about six shots in the end) were taken in Stockholm... ah, the first rays of sunshine us poor Finnish dwellers had seen this year!

Great thing #3: with a regular 36 shot film you can either have 36 shots or 72 half shots and that means that you can take lots of pictures of your friends taking pictures of you... or drinking. If you're really talented, you can even manage to get all that into one tiny little half shot (which greatly confuses the scanning machine I bet). Now if that's not art!

Alright. Enough of the "artsy" shots, the final film shots from Stockholm (normal ones this time!) under the cut!

six more shots under here )
cerealjoe: (australia - loving the koalas)

Alrighty. I'm coming here from the land of the sun, which is surprisingly still Helsinki! This wonderful weather is supposed to last till Sunday and it's great because my dad's in town till Saturday evening and that means that we've been hanging out in the evenings as it's so nice and warm.

I still can't believe the weather... it was snowing less than three weeks ago and now it's 25C outside... not to worry, we're going back to 12C soon enough.

I got two of my Diana Mini rolls back, a redscale one and a black and white one. I started the red scale one still in Shanghai and it went with me to Stockholm and Marseille so there are quite a lot of different things on there!

Night and indoor shots with a redscale iso 100 still came out rather well in the end! I'm quite surprised. For comparison, I wanted to link a photo of the highway I know I took but the one in the LJ scrapbook seems to be glitching and I didn't upload it to Flickr. Oh well.

In any case, here is what the Expo2010 set up looked like in colour, and here is another lit-up Shanghai shot.

Lauttasaari and snow look rather good. I think that the more white or light colours there are in the shot, the better it comes out. That must be the main trick to redscale now that I look back...

and two more shots of Lauttasaari under here )
cerealjoe: (FF - mine is an evil laugh)

Given the lack of light, I got some great shots with the Diana Mini in Shanghai. Here are three of my favourite ones... I'll post my very favourite some other time.

+2 )

And now for the real content, let me just tell you something it seems that my writing motivation is absolutely gone. I have three things to write and one conference article to correct and I can't get any of it done. Actually the conference article is all marked up but I just can't bring myself to making the damn changes on the computer. It's as if I've developed a phobia of typing up any of my work.

I think I'll cancel all of my plans for this evening and tonight and just hole myself up with some distracting background noise and a glass of peach syrup and Grand Marnier (best combo ever!) and face this phobia. I know what you're thinking, "Gali you're just a damn lazyarse person, stop making excuses!" and I guess that's partially true but dammit why can I do all the calculations and write huge paragraphs in my notebooks but I can't get them onto the damn computer. Can I have a typewriter? Maybe that'll work!

Allez bon je me motive! Je vais y arriver, je vais y arriver, je vais y arriver.

I can't even imagine just how bad I'll be when my whole PhD thesis is due before the reviewing... one should count about six months for the review process so that means if I want to finish my whole PhD in three years I have to have the thesis written by April of next year. Fun times. I think next winter will be tons of fun... at least I'll be back in the south for that.

And now, fill in the blanks friday!

1. The first thing I do in the morning is turn off the alarm. The song that's been my alarm ringtone for the past year or two years is Hello Goodbye by Aiba (from Arashi). I know it's weird but for some reason it's my wake up song!

2. Every night before bed I take out my contact lenses and brush my teeth.

3. My favorite thing to do when I'm having a bad day is indulge my love for crappy films and/or dramas. I have a stock of crappy stuff I have to watch on bad days. It's quite brilliant.

4. Something that makes me cringe is people who try to hard to impress others. I just have this terrible second-hand embarrassment for them, especially when the person they're trying to impress clearly thinks they're stupid.

5. Social situations tire me out, especially if there are too many people.

6. I like to collect cute pig related things and anything that catches my attention and is shiny.

7. Weekends are for trying to have at least one half day to do nothing. Absolutely nothing!

Edit: for those who didn't know I'm supposed to take a plane on Sunday to go to a conference to present a paper. And now all airports are closed in Finland... In a way, if I can't fly there I get extra days for work but on the other hand, well, I wouldn't get to present my paper, although that really wouldn't be my fault. Blah. Still not sure if I want the cloud to be gone by Sunday or not.
cerealjoe: (H2G2 - whale/flower OTP)

Woot! Got my first Diana Mini roll back from the shop. About six shots came out really well, the rest... well, most of them were too dark or I used the wrong setting.

Picture above: The Bad.

(left - outside, right: my fridge. Conclusion: one shot too light, one shot too dark and the scanning machine probably tried to find a balance and failed)

+2 - The Ugly and that other one )

Overall I'm quite happy with the results and I can see in some shots the mistakes I made.
cerealjoe: (janek - pretty)

First, a bit of good news, I've found a way to use that tiny little bag my mum got me for Christmas!

Second, yesterday there was lots of sunshine and there was supposed to be sunshine today also. I decided to bring the Mini with me to work so I can go hang out in town afterwards but of course the weather decided to be a party pooper. Instead of sunshine we now have snow falling out of a whitish-grey sky and wind, a lot of wind. Oh well, apparently there should be some sun tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Alrighty. Time for some more Fill in the blanks!

1. If I could medal in an olympic event it would be curling. It's a really awesome sport. Or failing that, I suppose something in downhill skiing would be good... given the number of times I've been on the "olympic" slope in Vars, I've trained enough.

2. If I was stranded on a deserted island I'd take survival kit (with knife, etc.), light food and a boat.

3. Sleds and deep bodies of water are my most irrational fear.

4. I'd rather eat meat at every meal (something I really can't do, even eating meat once a day every day seems pretty bad) every day, than do repetitive things (like classes) every day.

5. I am currently battling against a stupid software to calculate some sort of environmental impact and it's not working!

6. I should really be doing what I'm doing right now, strangely enough.

7. One of my favorite things in all the world is seeing my dad looking for me at the airport when I come back home. He can never spot me, ever.
