cerealjoe: (lara - bring out the guns!)

I'm trying to tie some loose ends here and there this week-end because during the week I honestly don't feel like doing much related to what's happening on here. I've actually updated the 365 days project till almost the end of August! Woohoo!

Now remember that trip to CERN/Switzerland and all those fun places? That was back in May. I promised myself I'd get everything sorted and posted before the trip to Korea... and now I've been there and back and to Canada and here are the final Diana Mini photos from Montreux.

But that's ok though, mainly because I can be seen hanging out with Freddie like a boss in those photos.

4x2 more of Montreux )

It also appears that one day I had brought the Diana Mini on one of my very early morning runs around Lauttasaari. That's the beauty of analog! I really didn't remember that and then seeing the sequence of photos I recognised my usual clockwise route!

1x2 more photos... of the water mainly )

Montreux, caught on film, part... something something. Actually this is probably part 1 as the previous photos ended on the way there.

These are posted straight as they came out of the shop, it's a good thing I had used 400 film, I think the Diana Mini with anything less isn't all that great when the sun is not out.

I finally got around to having a look at how the photos from the latest colour film from the Diana Mini came out. They're a tad dark but the guys at the shop were awesome and did not apply any equalisers/filters/etc. and let me tell you it's such a joy to work with raw photos rather than trying to counter the stuff that someone else has done.

This film started out at CERN and concluded at a CS meeting from two weeks ago... that's a lot of stuff to look at!

So first, here's CERN and a bit of France!

Do you want to be epic? So epic that they will put up statues for you? So epic that people will find it boring to take photos of the front of that statue? Then be like Freddie Mercury, be epic like him!

Alright. So by that point I was sitting down on the steps of the market hall in Montreux and I had realised I didn't have a single statue!Freddie photo... so I took what I saw. (here is what the statue looks like from the front)

And then there is another way to be epic and that is to get a postcard sent by Gali from Korea! You know the drill, either fill in the form below, post a comment (they're screened) or send me an email with your address.

If you received a postcard from me from China then I have your address, if you haven't moved since then and you want a postcard, just drop me a line saying so.

Ah. 2 days and about 8 hours till the World Cup starts... and for once I'm not really all that excited. Football is still one of those sports I enjoy but this year there is really only France for me to cheer for. I would even say that the selection matches were much more exciting for me than what's coming up.

In any case, I'll be mainly for France. Then if ever South Korea has a match while I'm there... I might cheer for them! Heck, if I find one I'll even get a Korean flag to add to my collection.

So France is playing on the 11th, 17th and 22nd. They're in Group A.

In Group B... South Korea is playing on the 12th, 17th and 22nd so at least I'll be able to catch that last match in situ (who cares if that's correctly used!) and that should be fun.

For all the other groups I really don't have any favourites I would like to see pass that round. It's pathetic.

That's the end of football talk for now. Till the 11th when we get our asrses beaten by Uruguay.

Speaking of holiday, I'm slightly starting to panic because I'm just so used to pre-booking everything and apparently in Korea it is common practice to just show up somewhere and find a hostel/hotel on the spot. It's going to be interesting, we'll see!

I can't wait to just kick back for a few days... and then I'll consider doing some work back in Seoul. What is wrong with me? I'm turning into my father. I really am. I already know that I'll be taking some work related stuff with me in case inspiration comes.

In other news, have I ever mentioned how much I love poppies? They remind of my childhood in the countryside. Everything is better in a green field with red poppies. Everything! Even Lake Geneva is better with poppies, it's pretty awesome by itself too.

two more photos of things I liked back in Switzerland )
cerealjoe: (bsg - six/baltar - a walk in the park)

Ah... wouldn't you liked to require some assistance on Lake Geneva just to see this kind of boat coming to your rescue? I doubt it's used very often but there is still something about how peaceful it looks.

In any case, let's go back to some fill in the blanks friday!

1. My dream vacation would be extremely long and would necessitate a lot of money. I basically can't choose a "dream holiday", it's just impossible. There are so many places I would love to go to but there usually isn't enough time. There are the Faroe Islands, there's Cambodia, there is actually the whole of South East Asia, there is Argentina and Chile and then there is the trans-Siberian and the trans-Mongolian. I really can't choose.

2. The best trip I've ever taken was perhaps my first trip to China because I really had no idea what to expect. I ended up doing only the touristy stuff but that first taste of China got me hooked and I really do think that eventually I'll have to get a new passport before my current one expires just because of all the Chinese visas!

3. The most important items to take on a road trip are clean undies and band aids.

4. The next trip I'm looking forward to is Korea! Only two more weeks and it's going to be awesome!

5. If I had to pick one CD to listen to for a long road trip it would be something by JJ Lin. If I had to pick just one JJ Lin album I'd say Sixology. One of the great things I love about JJ's music is the fact that on one album you have music to suit every single mood.

6. The biggest disaster I've ever encountered while traveling was probably the allergic reaction I got after two days of hiking in the Alps with my dad. I don't know what it was but the skin on my legs just got all weird. It went away pretty fast once I applied some anti-reaction stuff so it wasn't anything bad... I suppose it's on par with the allergic reaction I had in Shanghai where I was crying my eyes out because of the pollution/water.

7. My favorite traveling memory is camping all over France with my parents back in the old days. One year we really went all over the place!

Now how about we look at some more prettiness from Montreux? Yes, I really did take hundreds of photos in the day and a half that we had there! I really do understand all the people who decided to pick that city as a place for retirement.

eight (8) more photos of flowers, castles and cats )
cerealjoe: (DW - Lucy Saxon - Evil Genius)

Dear world, let me state some opinions that I have and that I need to share:
- I don't get that's the hype with Glee. Really.
- Why do people assume that I have a need to go see the Sex and the City film? I have never even watched a single episode of that show in my life! It's because I'm female and in my mid-20s that I automatically will want to!
- I don't know why everyone is all over the new Doctor Who series. They're good but they're not all that good. I have to admit that I kind of struggle after about five minutes into each episode and I must convince that I must keep on watching it because otherwise I'd watching something else.
- I've been having cravings for udon noodles. They are of course only sold in Asian shops around here and the closest ones are in Hakaniemi or close to Sello. I've been rather lazy to bike there these days. I think it's the first time a craving hasn't won over my laziness.

In other news, it's rather a tricky business getting the tilt-shift effect without the proper lens or without relying on those tilt-shift makers online. In the end this photo didn't turn out too bad:

There were many, many, many other attempts but this is the one I'm happiest with. It's mini!Montreux as seen from above.

Yeah, that's how I like to waste about an hour on Wednesday nights.

In other other news, today opens the CS Helsinki Weekly Meetings at the park season... and of course it's foggy and rather cold. Bah. I hope the afternoon clears up this weather a bit... yesterday was such a lovely day, why can't we get a day like that today also?
cerealjoe: ([cpop] JJ - pissed at pigeons!)

Yeah... try going up all the damn time. Isn't there a story about someone who tried to go to fast and then they ended nowhere? I remember the story of the guy who tried to fly too high and ended up crashing... but the other one. It wasn't really the hare, the hare just went super duper fast and then ended being tired. Oh well. I sucked at those stories anyway.

(Btw, the above photos are from a hike I went on while in Montreux, further photos under the cut, it was really lovely but walking up all those damned stairs killed me and I could barely walk because muscles I didn't even know existed started hurting.)

The point is that today I went to a meeting for international staff about some new stuff at our "new" university. For those who didn't know, three universities in Helsinki joined forces and became "Aalto University". Why not University of Helsinki? Because there is already one... so they looked for another name and what exports well besides Muumin and Marimekko? Alvar Aalto. Plus the name starts with a double A, try beating that to be the first one on the list.

Anywho... as previous seen it really looks like they're doing everything too fast! I remember that when I came to TKK a little over two years ago there were just starting to talk about Aalto University. It became a reality about a year and a half later and it seems like a huge mess! We didn't get any clear answers! We still have no idea about the tenure tracks, who'll finance them, what are the specific areas, etc. And now they also announce that the university will not be three schools but six because the current "School of Science and Technology" (ex-TKK) will be separated into four schools based on the current faculties. Bah.

I have a feeling that when I leave to do my year in France everything will change again. I'll come back and I won't even recognise Otaniemi! Alright, so maybe not to that point but still so many things will change and perhaps a tad too fast.

I really hope that they're just really bad at presenting stuff to people and that they know what they're doing because it would be a shame to lose great people who could have come to work for the different universities in Finland.

That was the "Gali must complain about something work-related at least once a day" part of the post. Now let's go back to Montreux!

Oh yeah and the fun part is that I just found some more photos of food from Shanghai I haven't posted. I really should get around to that!
cerealjoe: (eurovision - you know you love it!)

I've come to a very important decision this past week-end and it's that I won't be watching and rating every single ESC entry this year before the show. There 39 of them that's about three hours of videos to watch and write about and it's really not worth it.

Obviously I have my three usual biases because of living arrangements: France, Ukraine and Finland. Let's just say that France is so embarrassing that it hurts. Ukraine... well, they'll put her in a nice décolleté and she'll do fine but it's nothing to write home about. Finland, Finland, Finland, I love it. I really love that song and the fact that one of the girls is actually playing the accordeon is a huge bonus!

Maybe after work I can look at some of the entries of the semi-final tonight. We'll see.

In any case, here are some cute signs telling dogs to be polite and mind where they poop. They were on every street corner in Montreux! So adorable! (yeah, I just called "no pooping" signs adorable)
