Full disclosure: for about the last two weeks all the posts posted were actually written about two weeks ago and scheduled to spread out over time… because I know myself and I knew very well that there was no way in hell I was going to keep up with posting while being busy pretending being a tourist (oh, who are we kidding? There are just days when I don't feel like doing anything related to social media and that's why I make huge queues of posts whenever I do actually get inspiration).

All that to say that below you will see some of what happened last week. Namely apparently I'm pretty sure Wayne's Coffee in Norway has bigger "large" mugs than they do here (or maybe the table was smaller or my hand shrunk on that occasion). Oh, and fresh flowers in meh-level restaurant bathrooms? That's where they put all that oil money! I'm not kidding, fresh flowers. At first I was going to make fun of them for keeping fake flowers in water but then I touched and smelled them and they were real flowers. And finally - Eddy spotting! I didn't get to see him at this year's Tour de France because he hurt his shoulder before they came to Marseille, so I guess this makes up for it. But look at this! He's known in Norway, they put him on ads and all! I didn't actually think that a cyclist would have that level of fame there but it's Eddy The Boss after all. Maybe that explains all those Norwegian fans on the roads during races, they're proud of their local boys.

As you can imagine, for the next 1394873298472 weeks there will be photos of Oslo posted all the time. Mentally prepare yourself for that. But first there will be some other photos from stuff that happened before then… gotta keep that timeline somewhat normal.

Do you see that bench my skirt**-clad butt is resting on? You know who else rested their hot little butt on there? Zizou, Barthez, Blanc, Nasri, Benzema, Henry and the rest. If they've played on the French national squad after 1998, then chances are their butt has been there. If they have played a final of Top 14 rugby game, then they have been there.

Yep, that's me in the "home team" changing room at Stade de France.

Oh... and work is going fine, it's good to hear peeps say that what I'm doing isn't a waste of time but rather interesting! If I could offer them little hearts for their words, I would, they've totally boosted my morale.

*as Papa Rain's little guys would say.

Am I procrastinating? Mais non môôôônsieur! En fait si...

I counted, without going into way too many details, I still have at least four slides to finish for a meeting tomorrow.

Add to that add the fact that the strike at SNCF will still be ongoing tomorrow morning and that means that my usual 7:30AM train won't be going and that means I have to get the earlier one... and therfore wake up half an hour earlier. I used to be ok with waking up before 6AM but not anymore! I suppose I could see it as a positive thing, I get to practice turning on my "feux de route" (road lights? well, the ones that you only should turn on when there are no other cars and no lights on), it's an art, isn't it?

Alright. That's enough procrastinating. Here's dinner from a while ago... and one of the last tomatoes from the garden.

Ah. Yes. And this. Never say no to panda. I really love the last one, the one at the supermarket when the panda kicks the stuff on the ground.

Yes, I just love the judging panda. I can't even explain that one. It's like the judging cousin of the dancing panda... and we all love the that panda.

(or here if you can't see embedded stuff)

BTW, the post subject is a total reference to Love Shuffle, which is one of those jdramas I could rewatch over and over and over and over again. Yay panda!

Things that make my morning: calling a place to know if they develop film (those places are getting so rare these days!) and having them tell me that they not only develop film but they also have a parking lot. It might sound strange but small places in Marseille on busy streets usually don't have one and that means either you park "en triple file" or you leave the car far away. Well, I could cycle there but I also need to go visit my friends at an SNCF boutique so I can get the papers to get my monthly pass TER + RTM.

Fun times this morning.

Back in Montreal though, the adventures along the old port continue!

They now have wifi along there and you can download and listen to stories related to the old port. Those stories are kind of cute and I would love to be able to tell you if those stories were in French or in English but I can't remember. They probably were in French.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I cannot possibly live across from Chinatown for more than a day and not go buy sweets from one of the shops. The shop was closing so I just picked up the first things I could see... and now I have a stash for tonight and tomorrow.

Acting childish has never felt better!

Also there are shops selling bubble tea everywhere. I'll have to stop by for some on another day.

On an unrelated note, I'm really not a fan of Lady Gaga but damn Lady Heehee rules this world. Pictorial proof right here. Yes, that is the one and only Heechul aka the best diva on this planet and the person who makes up about 99% of the best content on Twitter (he even tweets while drunk, that's how dedicated he is to Twitter) aka the person who should be my BFF but he doesn't know that yet. Because yes, we should best friends forever and yes, we would totally call ourselves BFFs and strut around as if we owned the world.

Sorry about this fangirl moment but my inner fangirl must come out sometimes. And well, it's freaken Lady HeeHee. Have another photo tweeted by @heedictator himself because everyone should admire him... and as a bonus you get Kyu with a funny face in this one.

Gather around little children and let me tell you a story. This is a story of what I do when there is a summer storm outside and my curiosity gets the better of me. As it happens these days I'm catching up on old episodes of Family Outing, also known as "Gali's main source of very useful knowledge about Korea". In episode 60 and 61, Lee Hyori, also known as "Gali's Korean major girlcrush who can beat anyone's arse", said she wanted to make "egg rice" for dinner. If Hyori wants egg rice, she gets egg rice... and makes Gali want some too. The problem is that in the episode the egg rice making was just shown in tiny bits as summarized in the screencaps below:

Right. So take the egg out by making a hole and then put rice in.
some more screencaps and conclusions drawn from them )

So what are some things to consider:
- does one wash the inside of the egg shells before putting the rice in?
- how do you cook the egg/rice mixture?
- how much rice does one put inside the egg?

With these questions and many more, I set out on an adventure to replicate Hyori's egg rice. Next thing you know I'll try to imitate her doing U Go Girl or totally pwning Jaesuk and Kim Jong Kook at ice fishing. Google was absolutely not helpful on this one, I bet this has a very specific name and just looking up "rice cooked inside eggshells" is not the right thing to do.

Off to see the egg rice wizard we go! Those two eggs absolutely vonlunteered to be cobayes, I asked them beforehand. The rice was the cheap stuff that I use for everyday things... I could have gone to the shop to buy proper rice but there was a summer storm going on outside.

+15 more photos of how that adventure went )

Conclusions of this tiny culinary exploration:
- Hyori should publish a cook book. I'd totally buy it. All her fanboys and fangirls would too.
- This needs to be attempted again but with such small changes as:
--- not washing the inside of the eggshells
--- stuffing the eggshells with less rice
--- not sending cracks though the eggshells, no matter how small, while making the holes
--- not boiling up too fast but keeping the water always at a simmer
- perhaps trying to steam the eggshells/rice could also work.

Does anyone have a grandma who knows how to make egg rice? Does anyone know the right way to do this? As a scientist I will not give up till I finally get my rice that tastes like eggs and comes out all pretty... so any help to reach my goal would be more than welcome.

As all regions in the world, Jeju has its specialities: oranges/clementines, chocolates and meat from a local black pig.

On the last day I finally tried the black pig meat. As everyone knows, I'm not a connoisseur in terms of meat... it just tasted like pork with all the fatty bits. I liked the veggies and the sauce though.

This brings me to the question of food in Korea. So far, as expected, I've had some trouble finding meals without meat in them that weren't kimchi stew or bean based. I really do look at all the options for the food but I still can't really bring myself to ordering meat dishes often. The lack of tofu dishes is quite a change from China, I suppose it's not a very popular thing around here.

Gali tries more snacks and funky drinks and visits more airports )

As a side note, what's up with the trend for guys to have huge rocks on their wedding rings? I knew that some SK males were all about being metrosexual but damn!

And as a side side note, I saw one of them Krispy Kreme doughnut places. First time I see one in real life, I've only read about them and their crazy waiting lines in Japan, apparently they're also here.
cerealjoe: (jenni - happy in pink)

This is pretty much the only reason I might be able to be tempted to go to a McDonald's here. Just to see what kind of concoction they might come up with...

The other day I found this option at a food place, kimchi-bulgogi in rice bread. It wasn't bad at all! If they can make this, they can make a kimchi burger!

cerealjoe: ([jpop] Arashi - text - Aiba - smile and)

Have I already mentioned that I love the fact that in Korea almost every cafe/sandwich place offers free wifi? Well, as it happens my hotel doesn't have wifi, it's in the "new" city of town (ie it looks very shady but does have those small baseball places that you always see people going to in dramas to practice hitting balls, I have to check out if I can go there... haven't touched a baseball bat since my freshman year of high school), and obviously "new" does not mean "modern". There is a "business center" but hell, I'm too lazy...

So yeah, I'm at this place eating kimchi bulgogi and using the interwebs. Ah, Korea, you are amazing!

Also Korea, I love your taxi drivers but damn, it's hard communicating. But it is kind of hilarious when eventually they warm up to you and they start talking to you and you can't do much more than just smile and nod once in a while. I mean either they really do enjoy telling strangers their lifestory or they're highly amused by me and therefore feel the need to entrain me.

Anyway, here are some photos from my trip to Gimpo airport this morning. Some of the stuff is random and I took photos of some of the kpop-related ads out there. I think there were about seven times more but if I start taking photos of all of them I wouldn't be able to walk more than three hundred meters in an hour.

Let's start with my kpop "happy place", SS501. Yes, they're my kpop equivalent of Arashi. Well they were, now there are stories of disbanding, etc. Basically I got into kpop because of HyungJoon (aka Baby aka HJB) and I've stayed ever since. They're not as lulzy and amazing as Arashi but still... when shit hits the fan in kpop (it happens almost every other week these days), SS501 seem untroubled.

And as a bonus you get some random statue. You can take a photo with it. I'm not quite sure what it was though.

in the metro, walking on the right side, and some sweat to drink )

Right now I'm on Jeju Island and it's incredible the number of flights that land here. My flight was full, large plane too and they have hourly flights. And that's just one company! When you see how many of them fly here (and have "Jeju" in the name), you can only wonder just how much Korean people love flying here.

On another note, for the first time today I witnessed the "white man" syndom. Middle of nowhere, another "white" person comes the other way, you feel obliged to acknowledge each other...

The next entry will be about me spazzing about my new (rather expensive) toy. The store opens in a bit than two hours... I could have gotten there yesterday when I ordered but I just didn't feel going out in the pouring rain.

This morning though, I'd like to mention a thing that makes my life so much easier. One of them is the "testbed" project they have on the Finnish Meteorological Institute website. It give you a local map of where the rain is currently. I know that there is almost the same function on the hs.fi (iirc) website but theirs is much harder to read and the predictions are most than fuzzy. This one is lovely and it's great if you have to go outside, you can see just how long you've got before you get drenched.

I suppose I should also mention the World Cup. I didn't watch any of it, I kind of looked at the results at the end of the matches. Oh heck, I'll be shallow... and only look at the pretties.

Someone tell me who the pretties at the WC this year are! No, I'm not lazy. There are just too many teams for me to check out!

Yeah. Someone needs to replace the Czech NT. See, even Janek is not happy about the lack of hot Czechs.

Janek

Bah. I don't feel like going out anywhere in this rainy weather...
cerealjoe: (fashion victim)

This is my dad's old Zenith-E. It's a version that was made for the Olympic Games in Moscow! Apparently all my youth was shot with it and developed by my dad in person! I should post some photos from that time... good times! In any case, now it's just sitting on top of a dresser in the computer room at my parents.

But why the talk about cameras? Because I just ordered a Diana Mini for myself. I've been in love with lomo photography for a very, very long time but I could never justify actually buying a lomo camera. Then I saw the Diana Mini and I fell in love at first sight. It's perfect! And it takes 35mm film! And it can take up to 72 shots with one film!

I just ordered mine from the official site along with six rolls of film. Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be delivered before I leave for Shanghai. I can totally see myself shooting some awesome things there. I got some amazing shots in Beijing so Shanghai should be the same. Then I'm going to Stockholm later on, that's also worthy of lots of shots.

I also booked my tickets to Marseille for Easter. So much to do!

The thing I'm worried about is getting film developed. To be honest the last time I had a film developed was back in... 2005. I wonder if these days they can scan the negatives for you as well as printing out the photos on paper. They must!

Alright, I'm off to bounce some more because this is making me so happy!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
cerealjoe: ([kpop] 2pm - Nichkhun is a lovely rabbit)
Okie. So how about some lulz tonight. You know how we all learned from Barney Stinson that nothing good can happen after 2am so you might as well go home? It's true. Nothing beats 2AM.

Raise your hand if you've heard of the Dirty Eyed Girls. Haven't heard of them? Well maybe you've heard the controversy of the article on some Dutch online place about the Chinese gay porn that came out recently. The one where someone commented that it wasn't actually Chinese but Japanese and then went on to make really homophobe comments. Even the DailyStar had their say on this! (note that the article is completely false)

(the Dirty Eyed Girls in question)

The thing is, it's not Chinese gay porn or even Japanese gay porn or even any kind of porn at all. It's a great, amazing parody of Abracadabra by the Brown Eyed Girls by five amazing Korean guys. It's five guys, two from 2AM and three from 2PM. Probably the names won't tell you much so I won't bother actually trying to teach everyone who's who... the only one you'll really notice is Jo Kwon anyway. He's just amazingly fabulous, please see the bottom of this post for some videos of his awesomeness.

It all started on a "reality" tv show in which 2AM and 2PM starred. Something about bunnies (see my Nichkhun icon). I'll cut why they had to do it but in the end the five guys out eleven (Jaebom was still with 2PM at the time) had to record and film a music video for their parody. They called themselves the "Dirty Eyed Girls" because the lyrics are about... washing yourself. Yes, they're literally dirty and they must wash. They'll even wash their armpit hair and their panties! The Brown Eyed Girls even came to see how the video was made and got quite a laugh. The boys were acting so cute in front of them. 2PM also comes in at the end.

And now, in all its glory, Abracabadra - Dirty Eyed Girls version! (click here if you can't see the embedded)

Jo Kwon and Seulong, the two from 2AM also performed Abracadabra live. I dare anyone to say anything bad about this performance!

Boybands dancing to girlbands' songs, making drama parodies and Jo Kwon dancing! )

Damn. This turned out really long and took about five hours to compose... and preceded my huge arse posts about my "happy places" aka Arashi and SS501. But in conclusion, I'd just like to say that I greatly admire all the peeps mentioned above and they're super duper fun and "journalists" should do some research before writing things and some people should be throw off the internet for making stupid comments. Final disclaimer: I'm not crazy! I'm not. Really. This is not even 0.00001% of what one could post on the subject.

Warning: spoilers for IRIS. Duh. But not a lot of people on my flist are watching it so I'm not going to bother with an lj-cut. Just skip the entry if you care about spoilers.

Effing hell. IRIS just... I don't even know. I'm so not used to this kind of ending. I've been bathed in the goodie-shiny-all for the best kind of endings they have in American and UK series. Hell, even jdramas would never do that. Seriously, if you thought that Torchwood was bad because they killed off people, if you thought that Doctor Who was bad because they erased people's memories and killed off people... well that's nothing! Here not only did they kill people but they like to mentally torture people. Oh, so you love him, don't you? Look, you're almost going to have a happy ending but guess what? We're going to kill him off right in the last twenty seconds, so there! And you'll be left standing there, waiting for him and the screen just fades out and the viewers will be left wondering what the hell just happened. And showing all the happy memories while basically showing the last moments of a person's life... tear jerker.

Argh. From the start I should have seen it coming. Of course it couldn't have been a happy ending. Of course there will be fire and there will floods and there will be wrath of IRIS going on anyone who dares go against them. And yet I had hope. Those final thirty seconds... I'm not shocked or sad or anything like that. I just wanted something else.

Maybe it's because I was really disappointed by the way T.O.P (the guy in the photo above) was a whiny little bitch at the end. Sure he smirked really well, you gotta give the kid credit for that but his character was so badly written at the end. Honestly from the way they presented him he was good at three things: killing people, walking everywhere as if he were on a walkway and doing Neo-like moves when getting shot. He couldn't even pour wine properly! Bah.

But going back to the ending. I'll give it to them, the writers did a pretty good job. I'm definitely going to rewatch it in a month or two, once I've digested everything that happens in it.
