cerealjoe: (MW - Numberwang!)
While being totally OCD about some travel things, I went to check the bus schedule in Braunschweig on Sunday and the site was giving me problems.

Please inform me, are there usually buses on the 1st of May in Germany (more specifically in places like Braunschweig)?

(Just FYI, in Marseille public transport doesn't run on the 1st of May, so in the end some things would not surprise me. Still, the buses do run in Helsinki on Vappu, starting very early in the morning too as we made it to the Kaivopuisto picnic before 6am last year.)
cerealjoe: (reading is fun!)
Has anyone read anything good lately? I've mainly been on a Pratchett reading line these months but I also read this.

And I felt really disappointed because I really cannot bring myself to like any of the author's books. All I feel towards the main characters is disdain, they're beyond pathetic and their lives are absolutely miserable. I just don't see all the beauty that people keep on talking about... it's really sad because the translations are amazingly done.

But yeah, book recs? I read pretty much everything, so all recs are welcome.

Speaking of books, lately there have been loads of ads for Le Cercle littéraire des amateurs d'épluchures de patates by Mary Ann Shaffer and that title alone makes me want to read the book. In English it doesn't sound as fetching, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. "Amateurs d'épluchures de patates", it just has a nice ring to it. I'll get the book in English but still, a tiny nod to the translator for the title.

Oh, and the final photos from the Chinon & Agfa200 combo!

+2 - some unfocused Pratchett and hot stuff )
cerealjoe: (.hack - Haseo - u talking to me?)

Calling anyone who understands a bit of Japanese and/or can interpret pictograms well.

Yesterday I got this as a Christmas present for my lunchboxes (yes, everyone and everything needs Christmas presents, even my lunches)... and even though it was imported, everything is still in Japanese. I'd rather not sacrifice too many eggs in the name of my lunchboxes so can anyone help?

Here is what I figure it says:
1. Cook an egg and peel it. Put inside one of the little forms (I got the bear and the bunny kit).
2. Put it into (hot? To make the egg softer I would say that the water needs to be hot) water (for 10 minutes? I see a 10 written there so I suppose it's 10 minutes).
3. Take out the egg and tada! bear!egg or bunny!egg.

It seems to make sense but should the egg be cold or hot when first put into the shape? Of course it would make sense for it to be hot but how does one peel a hot egg? Should it be fully cooked or is it best to have an undercooked egg and then put it into boiling water for those 10 (?) minutes?

So many questions? Any input on this delicate matter?

Oh, and I also got myself some rice shaping thingies. The mechanical engineer in me absolutely geeked out when opening the package, they're amazingly wittily done.

+1 - the rice shaping thingies )

Hey! I saw some stars in the center the other day!

Stars. Yeah. Paper stars. Bad joke. I know. I still don't know where they came from.

Where do you think the stars came from? Do you have an awesome theory and are not afraid of sharing it? Then please do share and the person with the awesomest theory (as determined by awesome moi if there is one entry or fewer or if there are many theories we can have an awesome poll) will get some awesome snail mail (postcard, print, letter, used bus ticket, whatever floats your boat).

This theory gathering is open till I post something about it being closed... probably Friday or something.

Also, remember the random photos I posted a while back (1 - 2) asking what was in them? Only the lovely [livejournal.com profile] theidolhands and [livejournal.com profile] parrotthead were brave enough to try their hand at guessing and they're respectively the winners in the "closest answer" and "closest answer in a parallel universe" categories. I promised a corny postcard for the winners but I'll let you guys choose, either a postcard, a print of one of the photos posted here (please provide a link as to which one), a letter, as long as it can hold in an envelope and it's legal, I'll send it over... so guys, just let me know what you would like (and your address if I don't already have it).

Am I so out of the whole pop and modern culture circle that I missed the memo about mustaches becoming the new black?

Everyone for the past couple of months seems to be all over the mustache look. From the mustache parties, to the mustache finger tattoos, to the fake mustache photoshoots... and sticking a mustache on that lady statue in front of the Hôtel de Ville!

Can anyone give me a nutshell history of the phenomenon? I get Movember but this seems to have a started rather independently and not for a charity.

I'll be honest though, I find it a tad tacky, a fake mustache does not make you awesome and beautiful... it's still just you but with a tacky fake mustache. It's like those thick rimmed glasses, they were nice at first but once everyone and their mother's dog started wearing some, it got out of hand.

And those were my weekly opinionated two cents, life is good.
cerealjoe: (cupcakes - godzilla loves them too!)

In the same category as before, here are some more post-fog droplets.

one more )

As a random thought, is anyone looking for a penpal or something of the sort? I have this urge to write stupid things on real tangible things rather than just typing them up.

cerealjoe: (Pr0n - the internets has it)

I have a technical question. What do fellow LJers use to write posts? I usually start posts on the LJ update page in multiple tabs and then I sometimes close one by mistake or sometimes when 1203982 tabs are open Opera crashes and everything is lost. I still can't find a "save draft" button on the LJ update page and I highly doubt I would have missed it in the past seven years and that's kind of upsetting.

[Poll #1623514]

All input is greatly appreciated!

And here are some flowers I found the other day. I quite like how the sign was written... and it makes me wonder just what kinds of people there are in this world that such a sign is necessary.

cerealjoe: (Jenni - whatever!)

Right. Spring announced itself in Helsinki with snow and judging from the forecast, it's most likely not the last snow we'll see. I just hope this year it's not one of those years where we'll have snow on Vappu (May Day).

At least we had sun today.

Stockholm, part II! Sun, King Gustav and other fun things. I actually like Stockholm quite a lot, I'm almost tempted to choose it as a new "semi-permanent" (e.g. move there for a year or two or three) location eventually... if only they had euros there, but hey, at least the bank I use in Finland is massively present there too.

This is the view from the boat in the morning. The white dot is the Viking ship from Helsinki that follows the Silja ship almost all night.

I suppose not everyone is familiar with what a two night cruise Helsinki - Stockholm - Helsinki is... the boat leaves Helsinki at 5pm (Hki time), arrives in Stockholm at 9:30am (Stlm time) on the next day and leaves on that same day at 5pm (Stlm time) to go back, finally it arrives in Helsinki at 10am (Hki time) on the second day. You're free to choose if you get out in Stockholm or not, some people are too drunk/hungover but I always like to hang out on proper ground.

a dozen more photos of Stockholm proper, etc. )

On another note, is anyone familiar with Flickr? Can you batch-download your photos (i.e. is it a good solution for photo back-up or can one just download one photo at a time once they've been uploaded)?
