Ah, for the love of reading!
Jan. 25th, 2011 11:56 amHas anyone read anything good lately? I've mainly been on a Pratchett reading line these months but I also read this. And I felt really disappointed because I really cannot bring myself to like any of the author's books. All I feel towards the main characters is disdain, they're beyond pathetic and their lives are absolutely miserable. I just don't see all the beauty that people keep on talking about... it's really sad because the translations are amazingly done. But yeah, book recs? I read pretty much everything, so all recs are welcome. Speaking of books, lately there have been loads of ads for Le Cercle littéraire des amateurs d'épluchures de patates by Mary Ann Shaffer and that title alone makes me want to read the book. In English it doesn't sound as fetching, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. "Amateurs d'épluchures de patates", it just has a nice ring to it. I'll get the book in English but still, a tiny nod to the translator for the title. Oh, and the final photos from the Chinon & Agfa200 combo! ( +2 - some unfocused Pratchett and hot stuff ) |
Writing a thesis or two... the usual.
Jan. 19th, 2011 12:47 pmYesterday was a big day. I officially started a file (more like folder) that, hopefully, will be the start of my final thesis. So what if my PhD defense is scheduled for December? One can never start too early with these things. Today I even added the main equations into the file. And I've also noticed that I really lack consistency when naming the parameters, it seems almost all of my articles had slightly different ones. (now watch me abandon that file for about three months and then start panicking in April when it should be finished and ready for the final reviews) *sigh* If someone back in 2003 (end of lycée), or even 2005 (end of classe prépa)... heck even at the end 2007 (right before the final Masters research internship), had told me that one day I'd be getting a file ready for a PhD thesis. Well, I would have called them mad. And yet, here I am. This is almost slightly depressing. I need a "thesis" icon. Anyone has any good ones that could be used? Oh but I will have to drop off another film at the shop and I still have three films from which I haven't posted all the photos. The mountains came out rather well with the Agfa. I took this at 1/1000 I think, 1/1000! It's amazing that even thirty five years after it was made the camera mechanisms still work marvelously well (and it's supposed to be one of them "cheaply made" cameras... I wish today's "cheaply made" cameras could do something like that) ( +5 - more mountains... all kinds of weather ) |
Now you need some more resolutions!
Jan. 13th, 2011 04:33 pmHappy Old New Year! ( +1 - just because ) Why yes, there are never enough reasons in life to celebrate things. |
I'm a wee bit tired these days. Or maybe more than a wee bit. Sometimes I just want to tell everyone to ask me again in 2012 how I'm doing because till then I can predict I'll be in a constant state of fatigue just thinking about the things I have to get done. Still, there is more skiing this week-end... and there'd better be snow! Probably won't be as much as last time though. Perhaps that's a good thing. |
( +4 - of times when it was snowing like mad ) |
You don't watch Indian action films?
Jan. 2nd, 2011 10:06 amEvery road trip that you take multiple times has its usual stop spots. |
(Apples and pears. December 2010. Chinon. Agfa 200. Same for photos below.) ( +3 - bridges and lakes ) |
In other news, peeps who understand French might get a kick out of video. Alexandre Astier gives a very nice and honest response when asked about his opinion on shows such as "Who wants to marry my son?" and I couldn't agree more. You should watch till the end, at the last second one of the mothers speaks up and... well, proves his point. And here is a video of a video game controlled by pee. I suppose it could be useful to teach some people to aim. This collection of videos would deserve a post to themselves, if only I knew more about |
On voyage.
Jan. 1st, 2011 12:01 pmIt's more about the trip there than the destination, that's what counts. After so many years, we have stories about almost every kilometer... once there were cows in trees, another year we met so and so while stuck in a huge traffic jam, and every year we travel with a stock of Michoko. |
(Who needs a GPS when we have her? December 2010. Chinon. Agfa 200) ( +2 - this is where I first saw snow this year ) |
Please do absorb that chairlift.
Dec. 29th, 2010 10:10 amAfter the Whole duck hot translation at the Christmas market, here is another gem... once again it seems that those who attempted the translation did not even think of using GoogleTranslate. Unless it is actually possible to somehow "absorb a chairlift". I know for a fact that a few of the restaurant workers are native English speakers and I bet there must be a few good English speakers among the Risoul/Vars staff... so why didn't anyone tell those who put up the signs? Unless everyone gets a kick out of it like I did the rare times we fell on a chairlift that didn't slow down when picking up passengers. (I just checked with GoogleTranslate and "absorb" is the 3rd possible translation for "amortir", "cushion" being the first one. At least they didn't put "redeem" or "extinguish".) |
Thank you little Linda the bunny for LJ-sitting for the past couple of days, you're an awesome little bunny! (and sorry for having put you through the whole Santa hat ordeal but we haven't had a Santa hat clad bunny in a long time) And so I am back. After more than a week of not touching anything photo or computer related (beside catching up with some work stuff... and that doesn't count). But I have an excuse. I was busy admiring things like this... Talk about snow! It was snowing almost the whole time and I really think you can't go wrong with these kinds of lovely family holidays. Tons of snow, almost no people (French people tend to prefer spending Christmas at home with some extended family I suppose), no beginners on the good slopes and good food. Is everyone now ready for the equivalent of holiday slide night? ( +6 - more southern Alps and snow and more snow! ) So what did I miss? WWIII might have broken out and I wouldn't have known... and it's always more than refreshing to spend eight days like that. |
