My day yesterday was spent in transport and with CSers. Almost felt like being back home as the train was French technology and I see plenty of CSers back home.

There are so many trains going to Seoul from Busan (one every twenty minutes) that they have a system where no one waits close to the tracks, you're let in about 15 minutes before the train leaves. Buying tickets is also amazingly easy on their machines... that made me think, are the SNCF machines also in English or only in French? I really can't remember, or more likely I never paid enough attention to remember.

I'm quite glad I paid more and took the fast train (not just because it felt good seeing that "Alstom" written in big on each wagon) but because I already felt bored after four hours... if it had been seven hours I would have gone out of my mind. The scenery isn't really idyllic, it's just those tall buildings with huge numbers written on them, rice fields, construction works and mountains in the background most of the time.

more of the same and then some more and trying out some more random food )

I also happened to arrive back in Seoul right on the day of the monthly CS Seoul meeting. I finally got to go into one of those suburban tall buildings with the huge numbers of them. It was a set of "Hyundai" buildings. It was a very, very, very long way away by metro. I'm talking at least an hour. I really don't know how people do it who have to commute daily for hours, that's the main reason why I really think that a flat in Toulon would definitely beat commuting there from Marseille every single day.

Anywho, I was the only recently arrived and short term traveller there but everyone was lovely and there were two absolutely adorable doggies!

Actually attending such events really shows the differences that exist among CS communities. In Seoul and South Korea they seem to have more bigger events (retreats, etc.) rather than smaller local events. Back in Helsinki we mainly have the weekly meetings and the local events that just focus on going out for coffee or things of the sort. And both communities rock, so everything can exist!

Also, if I could give one advice, it's that it's best to bring an international credit card along rather than cash. It's much easier in some places outside of Seoul to find "global" ATMs than a place that would change currency. For example, the closest place to Busan Station (the main train station in Busan which is the third or fourth largest city in the country) is a good twenty minutes' walk away. Actually in Seoul also it's not all that easy because those official looking change bureaus and banks that will change currency all have funky working hours.

Yesterday it rained in the morning but rain has never stopped us from going out for picnics! At least this time around it wasn't as freezing as on Vappu and there was no need to wake up 4:30am!

Plus there is a bbq shelter on Mustikkamaa so it was always possible to hide if the rain started up again.

what's a proper Finnish bbq without sausages? )

The CS Helsinki Weekly Meetings are back in the park (after a very successful run in Cafe Talo, go visit there, they're awesome people and the place is great)! Yay! We had such a great turn out this week, it's incredible. I really do think that those weekly meetings are a huge part of what makes the CS Hki community so awesome. Yeah, I might complain about CS related stuff from time to time but in the end it's all still worth it!

If we're friends on Facebook you might have seen the random "waste management" discussion there was when I posted about the "WM at the park"... ah... yes, I tried coming up with other interesting areas of discussion based on the letters W and M. There is really a lot of stuff that can be abbreviated with WM.

Also please see my second attempt at the whole tilt-shift stuff. It's really not that easy finding a good way to photograph something for those kinds of photos.

In any case, today I'm finally going to Hakaniemi to the Chinese and Thai shops. Udon noodles, wonton wrappers and mushroom flavoured soy sauce, here I come! And I obviously can't forget my little red bean buns... I make it sound like it's far away but actually by bike it's only about 7km from my house... but I have to cross the whole city center and it's probably the one place I hate cycling because there's always people and they usually don't respect the cycling line and just walk there.

Right. Spring announced itself in Helsinki with snow and judging from the forecast, it's most likely not the last snow we'll see. I just hope this year it's not one of those years where we'll have snow on Vappu (May Day).

At least we had sun today.

Stockholm, part II! Sun, King Gustav and other fun things. I actually like Stockholm quite a lot, I'm almost tempted to choose it as a new "semi-permanent" (e.g. move there for a year or two or three) location eventually... if only they had euros there, but hey, at least the bank I use in Finland is massively present there too.

This is the view from the boat in the morning. The white dot is the Viking ship from Helsinki that follows the Silja ship almost all night.

I suppose not everyone is familiar with what a two night cruise Helsinki - Stockholm - Helsinki is... the boat leaves Helsinki at 5pm (Hki time), arrives in Stockholm at 9:30am (Stlm time) on the next day and leaves on that same day at 5pm (Stlm time) to go back, finally it arrives in Helsinki at 10am (Hki time) on the second day. You're free to choose if you get out in Stockholm or not, some people are too drunk/hungover but I always like to hang out on proper ground.

a dozen more photos of Stockholm proper, etc. )

On another note, is anyone familiar with Flickr? Can you batch-download your photos (i.e. is it a good solution for photo back-up or can one just download one photo at a time once they've been uploaded)?

Bid good-bye to Helsinki and the White Church, said hello to Stockholm and its beautiful buildings and perfect weather, spent most of the time on the boat in between... I did enjoy it but boy, am I glad we only do the CS cruise once a year! 47 other peeps came along this time around, big groups are fun, but only for a limited time.

See there is the White Church in the background!

Yes, most people go on the cruise not so much to visit Stockholm (the boat arrives there at 9:30am and you're supposed to be back on before 5pm on the same day) but for the atmosphere on board, especially if it's a cruise leaving on Friday evening.

+15 of the islands and cheap buffet dinner wine )

Sunny, no really the weather was wonderful, Stockholm in the second and final part... now it's time for some sleep.

This year CouchSurfing Helsinki had a stand at the World Village Festival and we're starting to get feedback from that, yay! Alas, on the first day it rained quite a lot and I was rather happy to have my shiny nokian wellies on.

two more under here )

There are loads more pictures at the CS Helsinki Picasa account and in various people's FB accounts.

Vappu was awesome and I will upload pictures from then one day. One day! Nice sunshine, lovely people, not too many druns in our part of Kaivopuisto, 45 minute queues for the bathrooms, the usual :)

I left the parc around 6pm, I had been there since 8am and up since around quarter to 6 with very limited sleep the night before. I was dead tired but those days are well worth it.

Now it's "active Sunday" time. I had a really nice run this morning and this afternoon we're playing Ultimate frisbee again. It's not the favourite sport of CS Helsinki. Mainly because I said so :p

Today and tomorrow are probably my two favourite days in Finland. I love Vappu so much, it's just beyond incredible. Maybe it's because it was on April 30th and May 1st that I met the people who made my summer just amazing last year but I'm just in love with those days. For many foreigners, it's a day when Finns get drunk beyond reason but for me, it's just a wonderful tradition.

Tonight, people will gather at the Amanda (Manta) statue on Esplanadi and the statue will get washed and then she will receive her student cap. It's a great opportunity to drink some sparkling wine... although this year, I went for a small bottle of good French champagne. If I am going to drink something, it'd better be high quality. Afterwards, some people don't even sleep till the next morning but I'll just go to a party and leave before the last tram goes. I need a night full of sleep if I want to be in the park at 8am the next morning!

Tomorrow, we'll be in Kaivopuisto having a picnic. It will be marvelous, it really will. This year I've decided to fully enjoy it without alcohol, I've grow up quite a bit in the past couple of months and, especially after the Hki-Stockholm-Hki cruises, I've decided cheap alcohol is just not for me.

I can't stop smiling today. And I bet that smile won't go away for a while yet.

Fun times!

Yesterday we had a lovely day at Tervasaari, a tiny island connected to the main land by a bridge. Here are some pictures taken by one of the guys (Toni Walia from Poland).

OMG watching last night's Switzerland - CR and there is so much prettiness it's almost impossible to cope with. Ujfi! Jaro! TEH Prettiness aka Janek! And this other kid I haven't seen before or maybe I wasn't paying attention. Ujfi really needs to get a haircut, as in really.

More seriously, that game wasn't bad at all (or at least the first couple of minutes I have managed to watch so far).
